FAQS

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What are IPL & ELOS?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light, ELOS stands for electro-optical synergy and combines bipolar radio frequency with the optical (broad spectrum light) energy of IPL.

What can this technology be used for?

Both IPL & ELOS technology can be used to:

- Rejuvenate skin (ELOS FotoFacial)

- Repair sun damaged skin

- Treat pigmented lesions, including acne scars

- Treat vascular lesions

- Improve skin texture- wrinkles and fine lines

- Remove unwanted hair on skin types (white to light brown) and hair colours other than white and blonde.

Is the treatment safe?

Treatment is relatively safe for the skin. There are many advances in IPL and the new ELOS technology that make it one of the safest skin rejuvenation and hair removal systems available. There are no known long-term health hazards and both light and electric energy have been used for decades in medicine, surgery and aesthetics without adversity.

SKIN REJUVENATION
How does the technology rejuvenate the skin?

The gentle light and electric energies break up the pigment and/or blood in lesions and stimulates collagen restructuring and/or production, restoring skin to a more youthful state. Brown spots (pigmented imperfections) from sun damage and ageing, red blotchiness from spider vessels or rosacea (vascular imperfections) and rough skin texture will improve over a treatment series.

What kind of results can be expected from a FotoFacial (facial rejuvenation) treatment?

Each ELOS FotoFacial treatment will result in gradual lightening and improvement of pigmented and vascular imperfections. Textural improvements are appreciated towards the end of the treatment series. Here are some of the changes that can be expected:

- With a series of five treatments people with ruddy complexions should see an improvement somewhere between 60 and 70%

- Broken capillaries should resolve about 75%

- Sunspots, brown spots and freckles will improve anywhere from 80 to 90%

- Fine wrinkles around the eyes and mouth area improve around 40 to 60%

- Deeper wrinkles will improve anywhere from 20 to 40%

How frequently do treatments need to be performed?

Treatments are repeated every 2-4 weeks for an average of five treatments.

How does the  treatment feel?

The sensation is often described as an elastic band being 'snapped' on the skin. The sensation only lasts for a fraction of a second and a warmth or tingling sensation may be experienced for a short time afterward. Most people do not find it painful. Topical anaesthetic is not required.

What happens after each treatment?

Temporary pinkness in the skin lasts a short time and most people return to work or normal activities immediately after treatment. Any pigmentation will go slightly darker initially, indicating that it has been effectively treated. Redness may last longer in some cases, your practitioner will discuss this with you. The improvement in pigmented and vascular irregularities is usually noticeable in about 2-3 weeks.

Who can experience the benefits of a FotoFacial skin rejuvenation treatment?

Anyone who wants to improve the signs of sun damage and ageing of the skin, such as pigmented and vascular irregularities such as broken capillaries, or lax skin. Skin rejuvenation is typically performed on sun exposed areas such as face, neck, chest, arms, hands, legs, shoulders and backs.

HAIR REDUCTION
How do IPL & ELOS technology get rid of hair?

Gentle light and electric energies combine to damage the hair follicle. This disables the follicle from growing hair, which means that gradually over several treatments, there is a long-term reduction in the amount of hair in that area.

What kind of results can be expected from the hair removal treatment?-
Each treatment will result in less hair coming back, as well as becoming finer and slowing regrowth. It may appear that hair is becoming lighter but this is due to the reduction in dark hairs. It takes more than one treatment to affect all the follicles growing in an area, as depending on the area of the body, approximately 20% of hair follicles are in the stage which makes them vulnerable enough to be destroyed. For this reason most people acheive satisfactory clearance after approximately 7 treatments, however individual results vary depending on medical and genetic factors. Lighter hair will also require more treatments than darker hair, as dark hair draws more light thus resulting in a stronger reaction in the follicle.
How frequently do hair removal treatments need to be performed?
Most people require 5-9 treatments, which are usually performed every month. Frequency will depend on individual factors that your practitioner will discuss during your consultation.

Who is suitable for ELOS/IPL hair removal treatments?
Anyone seeking a long term alternative solution to shaving, waxing, plucking or electrolysis. If you have a hormonal condition causing ongoing hair growth, IPL will drastically reduce your ongoing hair management. There are a few medical contraindications, such as pregnancy, that the practitioner will discuss during your consultation.

WRINKLE RELAXING INJECTIBLES
What is injected?

We inject a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkle-causing muscles creating a smoothed, rejuvenated and more youthful appearance. It's a simple non-surgical procedure that smoothes the deep, persistent facial lines that develop over time. One ten minute treatment- a few tiny injections- relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed for four months.

The results are dramatic and apparent within days. For many, the treatment temporarily erases those lines.

This treatment has been widely tested with 12 years of safe and effective use in hundreds of thousands of patients worldwide for various medical uses.

How does it work?

Many facial wrinkles occur when we make repeated facial expressions. The treatment relaxes the tiny facial muscles that cause expression lines, leaving the overlying skin smooth and unwrinkled. Once the muscle is relaxes, you cannot contract it and continue to make the undesirable facial expression. Thus the lines gradually smooth out from disuse, and new creases are prevented from forming.

The treatment works on the specific areas treated. Other muscles like those used to raise the eyebrows are not affected so a natural expression is maintained. It will not "freeze" your facial expressions. It softens them and works where you want it to.

What can I expect from the treatment?

Your doctor will determine exactly where to inject to achieve the best results. No anaesthetic is required, although your doctor may use ice before injecting. Treatment takes around 10 minutes. A tiny amount of product is placed in selected facial muscles via tiny injections using a very fine needle. Discomfort is minimal and brief- most patients describe it as an ant bite sting for a few seconds.

Most people resume normal activities immediately. After injection, it takes 2-3 days to begin seeing effects and around 7 days to see the full effect.

The treatment will last for up to four months, depending on the individual. You can decide to repeat the procedure as you wish. The result will wear off gradually and expression lines slowly return. To maintain the effect you will require repeat injections 2-3 times a year. Studies show that with repeat treatments, the effect can last longer, so you may require less frequent treatment in the future to maintain the result you have come to like.

In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects are temporary and localised to the area of injection. These include soreness or mild bruising, which can be easily covered with makeup, headache, and less commonly, you may develop a heavy eyelid lasting 1-4 weeks which your doctor may be able to treat. There have been no permanent side effects reported, however it is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding of for patients with a neuromuscular disease.

Where can it be used?

This treatment is used widely for the elimination of:

-  frown lines between the eyebrows

-  horizontal forehead wrinkles

-  crows feet or smile lines around the eyes

- It is also being used to lift the eyebrow and open up the eye for a more youthful appearance.

Is this a common cosmetic procedure?

The treatment was the number one cosmetic procedure in 2001, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In the United States 1.6 million procedures were recorded in 2001.

Is it suitable for men?

Yes, it is equally effective on men and women. Over 220,000 procedures were performed on men in the US in 2001, making it the leading cosmetic treatment for men. Because it is effective for stress (frown) lines, it is popular with many businessmen to leave them looking more refreshed and approachable.

Is it expensive?

When considering your facial enhancement options, the treatment is quite affordable. Many people are surprised at the relative cost compared to their other appearance related investments such as facials, hair colouring and wrinkle creams. As one patient reported:

"It is surprisingly affordable- around the same as three facials or a few visits to the hair colourist."

Will my lines look worse if i choose not to continue treatments?

No. Your lines will gradually revert to their pre-treatment appearance. This may take 3 to 6 months or longer.

Can this be combined with other procedures?

Yes, it is often used in combination with ELOS and other procedures in tandem.

Is it suitable for me?

WRINKLE FILLERS
What is injected?

Hyaluronic acid is a component that is naturally produced by the skin. With the years our skin produces less hyaluronic acid, which is the result of normal aging process. Your skin becomes thinner and as a result, it becomes loose and starts to wrinkle. This reduction in skin volume can make your face look thin and narrow, possibly making you appear older than you are.

Our products contain hyaluronic acid, which is a naturally occurring component of the skin and is the key factor of young looking skin. Your skin will immediately integrate the filler since your body recognises it as a natural component.

Is it safe?

Because it is made of a naturally occurring component, it is perfectly bio-compatible, fully bio-degradable and highly safe to use. Tthere are minimum risks of allergic reactions or other side-effects.

This is why at the end of the session you are able to immediately return to your regular activities.

What is the effect ?
All those undergoing treatment comment on the immediate and natural “lifting effect”. Wrinkles simply disappear without transforming and “freezing” your face or your natural facial expressions.
How long does it last?
These results are also long lasting: the natural origin means it is gradually re-absorbed by the skin after a period of 9 to 12 months.
What will be treated?
During the session which lasts for about 30 minutes the practitioner will inject superficially into your skin, specifically into the areas to be treated: naso-labial folds, lips, smile lines, crow’s feet or worry lines, forehead wrinkles, depressions or scars.
How does the treatment feel?

This product has been designed to reduce treatment pain and patient discomfort. Your practitioner will, in addition, ask you about your sensitivity to pain. Depending on the answer, they may propose the use of a local or topical anaesthetic. However in most cases a local anaesthetic is not necessary.

How long will it be before I am able to see the results?
You will immediately notice a distinct result in the area treated.
Increase of lips volume, enhancement of your lip’s contour, disappearance of wrinkles, filling in of deep folds or depressions…in about 30 minutes you gain 10 years. Your beauty objectives are achieved, in the most natural and smoothest way possible, the treatment results last for a long period (up to 9 months).
Are there any possible side effects?

Esthélis products are made with a component that naturally occurs in human skin. Since its launch no allergies or other side-effects have been reported by practitioners. At the end of the session you are able to immediately return to your regular social and professional life without having to suffer from prolonged social isolation.

TEETH WHITENING
Is whitening the teeth harmful?

Recent scientific research by the University of Leuven (Belgium) has shown that where the teeth are normal and healthy there are no demonstrably adverse effects on the tooth enamel. Furthermore, CosmeticBright® ensures a precise level of dosing that meets legal requirements. The unique pre measured kit prevents excessive dosing.

Can everyone have their teeth whitened?

No, not everyone. People that at a young age have used medicines such as tetracycline are not eligible for the treatment. Also any discoloration and stains resulting from decalcification such as excessive use of fluorides and porous teeth will have little result from the treatment. People born with grey teeth will likewise gain little benefit from the treatment.

However, it may be assumed that this treatment will have its effect for 90% of users, though it is advisable for the teeth to be in order and without cavities.

What is the teeth whitening process?

Teeth Whitening is actually a bleaching process that lightens discolorations of tooth enamel. This process uses an effective whitening foam strip ( Unique) retained in a mouthpiece that is worn over your teeth for 20 minutes and as many times after that until you have reached your desired level of whitening.

How does dental bleaching remove stains ?

Dental bleaching systems will remove most stains with a gentle action that whitens your teeth. As the active ingredient in the foam strips (hydrogen peroxide), is broken down, the U.V. light and the warmth acts upon the stained organic deposits, which oxidizes them into a white color. This process makes the overall tooth color closer to its natural unstained color. Your tooth structure remains unchanged. Years of clinical tests have demonstrated the safety and effectiveness of this system. Over 90% of people treated achieve some level of tooth whitening. Crowns, bridges and fillings do not lighten with dental bleaching.

Is the whitening process permanent ?

For most people, the treatment will last for many years. Your teeth have become stained in the first place from consuming foods and beverages. Upon the completion of your initial bleaching process, your teeth are restored to their natural white color. Exposure to foods, drinks (especially coffee, colas and red wines), smoking and other consumables will gradually darken teeth again over time. You may want to periodically bleach your teeth. After an initial treatment, most people do touchups about once every month.

What causes tooth discoloration?

There are many causes. The most common include consumption of foods, coffee, tea, wine, and smoking. In other words, our teeth naturally get more and more stained as time goes on and we continue to live our lives. NOTE - Tetracycline discoloration and artificial dental work are usually not responsive to dental bleaching.
